Amber woody · 50ml
Oud Wood is an amber woody fragrance built on agarwood, sandalwood and vetiver, opened with rosewood, cardamom and pepper and closed with tonka bean, vanilla and amber. Created by Richard Herpin and launched in 2007, it is widely credited with introducing oud to a Western audience, and remains the reference point for a smooth, refined interpretation of the note.
The opening is spiced but soft. Cardamom leads with a cool, almost fruity brightness, supported by pepper and a rosewood note that gives the first minutes a polished, slightly sweet woodiness.
Agarwood arrives quickly at the heart, but this is oud stripped of its harsher facets — no barnyard, no medicinal sharpness. Sandalwood adds creaminess and vetiver contributes a dry, faintly smoky edge that keeps the composition from becoming too smooth.
The base is where it earns its reputation. Tonka bean, vanilla and amber wrap the woods in a warm, creamy finish that sits close to the skin and reads as expensive rather than loud.
Tom Ford describes the composition as rosewood and cardamom giving way to oud, sandalwood and vetiver, with tonka bean and amber providing the warmth.

Expect five to seven hours on skin. Projection is deliberately restrained — noticeable within close range for the first hour, then settling into a skin scent that others notice when they are near you rather than across a room.
The softness is intentional rather than a shortcoming. Oud Wood was composed as a refined, close-wearing fragrance, not a room-filling one — if you want projection, apply three to four sprays or add one to clothing.
Tom Ford markets Oud Wood for women and men. It suits someone who wants the sophistication of agarwood without the intensity that many oud fragrances carry.
It is the most beginner-friendly oud on the market for a reason. If you have found other oud fragrances too sharp, too smoky or too heavy, this is the one that changes minds. Equally, if you already love powerful oud, this may read as too polite.
This is one of the most versatile oud fragrances available. It works year-round in Australian conditions, including summer, because the projection stays close and it never becomes overbearing in heat.
It suits the office, business meetings, daytime wear, dinners and formal occasions equally. If you want one oud fragrance that covers every setting, this is the safest choice in the category.
Tom Ford recommends one to two sprays on clean skin, and specifically advises against rubbing the fragrance in, as this alters how the composition develops.
Given the restrained projection, three sprays is reasonable if you want more presence. Store the bottle upright, away from direct sunlight and heat.

It is the most recommended starting point in the category. The agarwood is smooth and creamy rather than animalic or medicinal, and the vanilla and tonka base makes it approachable for anyone new to the note.
It was composed as a refined, close-wearing fragrance rather than a powerful one. The softness is a design choice, which is why it works in settings where stronger ouds would be inappropriate, such as the office or warm weather.
Yes. Tom Ford lists it as a fragrance for women and men, and the creamy woody profile is genuinely balanced rather than leaning strongly in either direction.
Tom Ford recommends one to two sprays on clean skin, and advises not rubbing it in afterwards. Three sprays is reasonable if you want more presence, given the restrained projection.
